Cevin Soling's new documentary The War on Kids is a must see. Here is a clip of the film maker on the Colbert show.
Soling shows how our school system is modelled after prisons. While our public education institutions were based on military models in the 18th century, our current schools have been increasingly modelled after prisons and factories. Schools beat conformity and docility into children, ultimately preparing them for "productivity" in factory/corporate environments at best, or channeling them toward prisons at worst. In the process, childhood behavior is pathologized. Real education has virtually disappeared (note how many children on this site complain that school work is boring). Currently overly 8 million children are on drugs (anti-depressents as well as stimulants such as Ritalin). Some thing has to be done.
The War on Kids is a desperately needed and most valuable contribution to the effort to bring sanity, intelligence, creativity, and joy back to childhood and education.
